Application


Qualification admission requirements

1. A South African LLB degree or 2. A foreign LLB degree of minimum four years duration or 3.A Postgraduate Diploma in Law on NQF level 8 For 1-3: If the candidate has not passed a research module on NQF level 8, he/she must register for and pass for NDP purposes, the 4th year LLB research module (NQF 8) before being admitted into the LLM or 4. A foreign LLB degree of minimum three years duration and four LLB modules selected from the NQF level 8 modules in the LLB degree of which one must be the compulsory research module or 5. A foreign LLM or 6. Candidates with a BProc or Bachelors Degree may apply through the RPL process for admission to the LLM. This process must prove NQF level 8 competence in law and research.


Maximum time to finish a qualification

  •  Coursework master's degree: A student registered for a 180-credit structured coursework master’s degree must complete the study programme within three years. A student may make application for one additional year of study to the Registrar. The Registrar will consult with the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is registered.
  • Research master's degree: A student registered for a 180-credit structured research master’s degree must complete the study programme within three years. A student may make application for one additional year of study to the Registrar. The Registrar will consult with the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is registered.
  • Doctoral degree: A student registered for a research doctoral programme must complete the study programme within six years. A student may make application for one additional year of study to the Registrar who will only consider the application if it is recommended by the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is registered.

The outcome of the Research Proposal Module for all master's and doctoral degree students is an acceptable research proposal, which means that you either comply or do not comply with the requirements. No mark is awarded for this module. Students may submit two draft proposals, and a third and final proposal. If the third attempt is not successful, you won't be able to continue with your studies.
