Application

  • Language test: TOEFL: 92 (all sections need to be at least 21; the writing section needs to be at least 23) or IELTS: 6.5 (all sections need to be at least 6.0; the writing section needs to be at least 6.5), or CAE or CPE.
  • Previous education: LLB or equivalent
  • Reference letter: 2 academic references should be provided
  • Written request : applicants must send a motivation letter (max. 650 words). The letter should be written by the applicants themselves; it is not allowed to submit an (official) translation.

Programme requirements


In order to obtain an LLM degree in European Market Law a candidate must successfully complete a total of 60 ECTS*:


a.   Five compulsory courses**:


-     Competition Law (6 ECTS)
-     Constitutional Principles of the EU Market (6 ECTS)
-     European Internal Market Law (6 ECTS)
-     EU Trade Law (6 ECTS)
-     Market Regulation (6 ECTS)


b. The seminar European Market Law (6 ECTS)


c. One course from the list of three optional courses (at least 6 ECTS):


-     European Human Rights Law (6 ECTS) 

-     European Law of Judicial Protection (6 ECTS)
-     European Sustainability Law (6 ECTS) 


d. Master’s thesis (18 ECTS)


* Students who have not taken European Law (or an equivalent) in their Bachelor have to take this course as an extra course. The course will not be part of the required 60 ECTS.


** Students who already took one of the compulsory courses in their Bachelor can apply for an exemption for such a course through the Board of Examiners. An extra course(s) should be chosen to replace the exempted course(s).


Programme structure


All programmes consist of six courses (minimum), a seminar and the writing of a thesis.


They are one-year full-time programmes and the language of instruction and examination is English. The academic year in Groningen runs from the first week of September to the end of August and is divided into two semesters of two blocks each. Each lecture block is followed by periods of examinations.


The Faculty reserves the right to cancel or alter courses when necessary. Applicants receive due notice of any changes in the curriculum. This website will always hold the most recent information about the programmes.
