Curriculum

In addition to traditional law school courses, Whittier Law School provides extensive opportunities for practical training. We offer a variety of clinical legal education opportunities and diverse externship placements.

Additionally, students with valid visa status may seek employment in a US legal setting for a year after graduating.

LLM students contribute a broad spectrum of educational and professional backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to our community, and enhance their educational experience through interaction with our richly diverse JD student body, outstanding faculty, and other lawyers from around the world. LLM participants benefit from the many opportunities available through Whittier's Centers and Programs, and from special programs for LLM students. The small size of our LLM class ensures personalized attention to the participants, while it also facilitates integration into the larger Law School community.

The LLM candidate must complete 24 credit hours to earn the LLM degree. The program begins with two core classes:

  • American Law
  • American Legal Research and Writing.

At the completion of the core classes, each student designs a program of study from the broad array of JD classes with the assistance of an adviser.

Subject to course availability, an LLM student can pursue a certificate in International and Comparative Law or in Intellectual Property Law. For no additional fee, LLM students interested in taking a bar exam in an American jurisdiction may participate in the many bar review programs offered on campus by our highly successful Academic Support Program.
